Effects of black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae meal as a partial substitute for soybean meal on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, blood constituents, carcass characteristics, intestinal morphology, and caecal microbiota in broiler chickens

The study aimed to investigate the black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae meal inclusion on growth performance, carcass characteristics, and blood-biochemical parameters in broiler chickens. A total of one hundred and sixty (n = 160) a day-old male broiler chicks (Vencobb-400 strain) were randomly divided into four groups on the basis of their live body weight with 4 replicates (10 chicks/replicates) in each group for 6 weeks. The four dietary treatments were as basal diet only (CON), while HILM3, HILM6, and HILM9 were incorporated with 3, 6, and 9% of Hermetia illucens larvae meal (HILM) as a partial substitution for soybean meal in the basal diet, respectively. The average feed intake, average daily gain, and feed conversion ratio were statistically similar between treatment groups. The digestibility of crude protein increased quadratically (P < 0.01) while digestibility of ether extract and calcium increased linearly (P < 0.05). All the major hematological and carcass parameters were not affected. Total antioxidant capacity (µmol/L), superoxide dismutase (ng/mL), and glutathione peroxidase (µmol/L) linearly (P < 0.01) increased with increasing levels of HILM in the diet. Villus height (Vh) and villus height to crypt depth ratio (Vh/Cd) of duodenum and jejunum quadratically increased but remained unaffected in ileum. Alpha diversity analysis of caecal microbiota showed that HILM inclusion increased community richness and diversity than control. Thus, HILM as a partial substitute of soybean meal up to 9% had no negative effects on growth performance, blood-biochemical parameters, and carcass characteristics with improved nutrient digestibility, antioxidant status, and caecal microbiota in broilers.
