Replacement of crop-residue silage for corn silage in feedlot buffalo

The objective was to assess the effects of varying levels of crop-residue silage (CRS) as replacement of corn silage in total mixed rations (TMRs) on nutrient digestibility, growth performance and profitability of feedlot buffalo. Twenty four male buffalo (n = 6 buffalo/treatment) with initial body weight (BW) of 145 ± 12 kg were divided into four groups with six replicates and randomly assigned to four TMRs at 48:52 ratio of forage: concentrate on dry matter basis (iso-nitrogenous with 13.2% CP). TMR contained 48% dietary DM corn silage replaced by ascending levels of CRS (0, 250, 500 and 750 g/kg respectively). The CRS was prepared from sugar-beet pulp, corncobs and brewer’s spent grains mixed proportionally as 15:4:1, respectively, ensiled for 45 days in plastic drums, while corn silage was purchased from the local market. This study lasted for a period 90 days including last 5 days of sampling for total-tract digestibility and nitrogen (N) balance determination. Average daily gain (ADG, 0.805, 0.831, 0.879 and 0.950 kg/day), total DM intake (DMI, 5.75, 5.86, 5.89 and 5.99 kg/day) and feed conversion ratio (FCR, 7.14, 7.05, 6.70 and 6.30 kg/kg) improved linearly upon increasing the levels of CRS as 0, 250, 500 and 750 g/kg corn silage in TMRs, respectively. However, increasing levels of CRS did not affect biometric measurements i.e., body length and hip height except heart girth. The digestibility of DM, crude fibre, neutral detergent fibre, acid detergent fibre and N balance were linearly increased upon increasing levels of CRS in the TMRs. Feeding cost based on ADG was reduced linearly from 279.54 to 267.53 PKR by increasing levels of CRS as replacement of corn silage. Overall results revealed that TMR replacing with 750 g CRS/kg corn silage resulted in the highest profitability by 21.3%, ADG by 18.0% and FCR by 11.7% in buffalo. Thus, dietary TMR replacing with 750 g CRS/kg corn silage could be economically feasible for the feedlot buffalo.
