<p>Rabbits are reared as a source of meat and fur in addition to being used as laboratory animals and loved as pets. A study was carried out in India to determine the demand of rabbits for their meat, fur and for keeping them as pets. An extensive survey was conducted among the people (530 respondents) of different walks of life using the ‘Availability Survey Technique’. It was observed that there was a good demand for rabbits as pets across all climatic zones. It was observed that 12.887% of respondents owned rabbits as pets. Demand for rabbit meat was found to be comparatively less due to lack of availability and awareness. Overall, 29.235% respondents who never tasted rabbit meat before showed willingness to taste the same in future. The willingness to consume rabbit meat increased among the respondents after making them aware of its health benefits. Majority of the respondents who had tasted rabbit meat earlier rated it better or similar to chicken meat and other meat. There was a good demand for rabbit fur especially in areas with cold, temperate and composite type of climate. It is concluded that rabbits have the scope to be promoted as a business venture given the growing demand of rabbits for meat, fur and companionship. However, awareness regarding the health benefits of rabbit meat needs to be created among people.</p>
