The protective effect of Adansonia digitata fruit extract against severe heat stress on growth performance, feed efficiency, and health status of fattened rabbits
摘要
The aim of the current study is to investigate the alleged protective role of Adansonia digitata fruit extract in mitigating the adverse effect of heat stress on growing rabbits. A total of 48 weaned Baladi male rabbits (6-week‐old) were subjected to oral administration of Adansonia digitata extract at levels of 0 (Adan0), 25 (Adan25), and 50 (Adan50), mg/head /day for 10 consecutive weeks. Both of growth performance and feed utilization as well as rectal temperature and respiration rate were significantly improved by the dietary treatments (p < 0.0001). The relative weights of liver and total edible giblets were significantly improved by the treatment (p = 0.0159 and 0.0469, respectively), maximizing in the Adan50 treated group. Erythrocytes and leucocytes counts were significantly higher in aforementioned treated group than the control. The Adan25 and Adan50 groups showed higher levels of blood protein and lower levels of cortisol and total cholesterol compared to the control (p < 0.05). The Adan50 treated group exhibited lower levels of liver enzymes, including alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase and reduced concentrations of creatinine and uric acid, indicating enhanced liver and kidney functions in response to the dietary treatment. Histopathological examination of liver sections revealed that the detrimental changes in liver tissue of rabbits exposed to HS in the control group were significantly alleviated through the oral administration of Adan extract. The levels of nitric acid, lysosome activity, interferonc –Y, glutathione peroxidase, catalase and total antioxidant capacity as well as immunoglobulin G and M, were significant higher in both of Adan25 and Adan50‐treated groups compared to the control (p < 0.05). Meanwhile, the levels of malondialdehyde were significantly decreased by the dietary treatment, minimizing in the Adan50 group. In conclusion, oral administration of Adansonia digitata extract at 50 mg/ head/day enhanced growth performance, feed utilization, hemato‐biochemical attributes, antioxidant status, inflammatory cytokines, and immune response of heat stressed growing rabbits.
