Skeletal muscle fibers, carcass yield and feed efficiency in native Pantaneiros lambs: a biotype characterization study

The study of skeletal muscle fibers, carcass yield, and feed efficiency in native Pantaneiro lambs is essential to understand the biotypical characteristics of this breed adapted to the Pantanal biome. Muscle fibers directly influence meat quality, while carcass yield and feed efficiency impact the economic and environmental sustainability of production systems. This research aimed to evaluate the association between muscle fiber types, feed efficiency, and carcass yield in different biotypes of Pantaneiro lambs. Thirty-three uncastrated males (82 days old; 12.8 ± 3.5 kg) were housed individually and fed diets targeting an average daily gain of 250 g. Body weight and condition scores were monitored weekly. Morphometric data (23 variables) were recorded at the beginning and end of the trial. Lambs were slaughtered upon reaching 28 kg and a body condition score of 2.75. Carcasses were weighed pre- and post-chilling. Samples from the Longissimus thoracis et lumborum, Semimembranosus, and Triceps brachii muscles were collected for muscle fiber analysis. Factor analysis identified four principal components; the first (muscle-related) explained 24% of total variance and was associated with weight and carcass yields. Cluster analysis defined three biotypes (A, B, and C). Biotype A (n = 11) showed superior intake (0.93 kg/day), gain (0.22 kg/day), muscle: bone ratio (2.9), lower bone content (18.9%), and higher red fiber proportions across all muscles. It also exhibited more compact morphometry than biotype C. The results suggest the presence of a more efficient biotype within the Pantaneiro breed, with traits comparable to specialized meat breeds. Further research is needed to support its potential for genetic improvement.
