Gut microbiome and antibacterial activities of Bryophyllum pinnatum (Life plant) blend on gut of broiler chickens

Bryophyllum pinnatum is one of the plants that can be explored for its various antimicrobial and antiparasitic properties. This study investigated the influence of bryophyllum pinnatum blend and its antibacterial activities on gut microbiome of broiler chickens. Two hundred (200) day-old broiler chicks were randomly allotted into five treatment groups, having four replicates containing 10 birds per replicate. Birds were administered Bryophyllum pinnatum at inclusion levels of 10 g/l, 15 g/l, and 20 g/l in water, while a positive control group was administered Enrofloaxcin antibiotics, while the negative control group was neither given the blend nor antibiotics. Administration of the test ingredient started from the 1st week of the experiment and it was administered every other week. The experiment lasted for 7weeks, on the 49th day of experiment, gut samples were collected and analyzed in the laboratory. Results revealed higher bacteria, fungi and coliform count was obtained from the Negative control groups compared to lower values obtained from birds on 20 g/l of Bryophyllum pinnatum. Bryophyllum pinnatum significantly influenced gut microbiota by promoting growth of beneficial bacteria while reducing pathogenic bacteria (Salmonella sp. and Pseudomonas sp., in treated groups. Fungal species (Fusarium sp., Penicillium sp. Aspergillus sp.) showed higher counts in the untreated group. The study concluded that inclusion of Bryophyllum pinnatum in the water of broiler chickens positively influenced the gut microbiome by enhancing beneficial microorganisms in broiler chickens thereby making Bryophyllum pinnatum potential medicinal plant in livestock production.
