<p>In this paper, we explore the intersection of biosemiotics, human agency, and artificial intelligence (AI) to assess how AI technologies can be aligned with human flourishing. We argue that a biosemiotic perspective, informed by Daniel Dennett’s philosophy, provides a framework for understanding ethical implications of AI systems. By comparing human cognition and action with AI systems, we highlight the similarities and differences in agency and intentionality. Biosemiotics emphasizes the role of signs and meaning in living organisms, suggesting that meaning is embedded in biological processes. We examine how this perspective can inform our understanding of AI’s potential for meaning-making and moral consideration. On the basis of biosemiotics requirements for agency, we caution against attributing genuine agency or moral responsibility to them, as their meaning-making processes differ fundamentally from those of biological organisms because of their lack of interaction with the environment. Ultimately, we advocate for a careful and ethical approach to AI development that prioritizes human needs and values.</p>
