Vulnerability as a Shared Condition: Rethinking Empathy across Species and Circuits

Vulnerability is often framed as a weakness or deficit, but this article reconsiders it as a shared and relational condition that can ground an expanded ethics across species and even technological systems. By bridging environmental ethics and AI ethics, the article explores how recognizing the inherent vulnerability of humans, nonhuman animals, ecosystems, and artificial intelligences can reshape notions of empathy, care, and responsibility. Drawing on posthumanist and relational ontologies, the study challenges human-centred paradigms and highlight frameworks such as care ethics and multispecies justice that demand ethical consideration beyond the human. The article examines theoretical insights from shared precariousness, multispecies entanglements and posthuman community, to articulate an ethics in which empathy and care are distributed across humans, other living beings, and even “circuits” of AI. The resulting vision is an interdisciplinary ethical outlook that treats vulnerability as a connective tissue of life and technology, fostering a more inclusive, compassionate response to the challenges of a planetary and increasingly technologically-mediated age.
