Buffer dimensioning per frames in packet networks

Critical systems have evolved towards distributed architectures across various application domains, supported by high-throughput Ethernet-based networks equipped with real-time constraint enforcement mechanisms (e.g., AFDX/TSN in avionics/automotive). Frame losses due to buffer overflow are prohibited when deterministic communication is required. In this paper, we present the Buffer Dimensioning per Frame (BDF) approach, designed for static buffer memory dimensioning. BDF is applicable to any packet-switched network using a work-conserving service policy, and provides a worst-case buffer occupancy estimate in terms of the number of frames. Our method represents a significant step forward in this regard. Moreover, the method is independent of the specific Worst-Case End-to-End Delay (WCEED) calculation method. This independence allows designers to use an already certified WCEED method in conjunction with our BDF method, ensuring compliance with certification requirements and reducing validation overall costs.
