Abiotic stress-induced resveratrol accumulation in peanut sprouts: methods and research frontiers

Resveratrol, a natural polyphenolic compound classified as a stilbene phytoalexin, is valued for its notable health-promoting properties. Research has shown that germination induces a significant increase in resveratrol content in peanuts, with pronounced accumulation in the roots and stems. Compared to conventional sources such as knotweed and grapes, peanut sprouts offer the advantages of shorter growth cycles and lower cultivation costs, which consolidates their status as a prominent and increasingly important natural source. As the biosynthesis of resveratrol is part of the plant defense response, the application of abiotic stress represents a pivotal strategy for its enhancement. This review summarizes recent progress in these abiotic elicitation strategies, which include light irradiation, ultrasonication, phytohormone application, and metal ion exposure, for increasing resveratrol biosynthesis in peanut sprouts. Future research frontiers are discussed, with emphasis on the integration of omics for a deeper mechanistic understanding and the pilot-scale validation of these elicitation approaches.
