Differential gene expression in response to Hemileia vastatrix in chemically mutagenized coffee plants (Coffea arabica L. var. Catuaí)

This study explores the potential of chemical mutagenesis to enhance coffee rust (Hemileia vastatrix) resistance in Coffea arabica L. var. Catuaí. One hundred and sixty-three plants were mutagenized with sodium azide and ethyl methanesulfonate and subjected to infection assays with H. vastatrix uredospores. Eleven mutagenized plants exhibited infection severity identical to that of the resistant control, CR95. Gene expression analysis of plants revealed upregulation of defense-related genes, including CaRLK, CaGT, and CaPR10, especially in plants with reduced infection severity. These results indicate that induced mutations may improve rust resistance, presenting a viable approach for developing resistant Arabica coffee varieties.
