Beyond minimality: mixed inferences as an anti-collapse problem for standard combination mechanisms

The problem of mixed inferences is a well-known challenge that is usually directed against some versions of logical pluralism. Most notably, against logical localist theses which state, very roughly, that the correct application of logic is not topic-neutral, domain-neutral or irrespective of subject-matter. This time, though, I want to stress the significance of mixed inferences not as a challenge to localism, but as a challenge to standard methods of combining logics, which often aim at minimal conservative extensions of the logics being combined. Thus, I will show that mixed inferences reveal a limitation in standard approaches to combining logics and constitute a type of anti-collapse problem for them. In order to overcome this limitation, I will offer a possible solution to the anti-collapse by expanding on the method of juxtaposition and proposing two combination mechanisms that I call coordination and strong coordination. These mechanisms will meet the anti-collapse problem by allowing the emergence of desirable bridge principles.
