In memoriam: Nikolai N. Semenov
摘要
Nikolai N. Semenov (1896–1986) was a world-renowned Soviet physicist who pioneered the application of modern physics to chemistry. He was awarded the 1956 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, the first “Soviet” Nobel distinction, for discovering the mechanism of branched chemical chain reactions. Beyond his scientific achievements, Semenov was a prolific organizer who built a vast network of research institutions, including the Institute of Chemical Physics and the science city of Chernogolovka. His career was marked by a complex relationship with the oppressive Soviet regime; he was both a beneficiary and a hostage of the system, often choosing accommodation over resistance. Through his disciples and institutional leadership, he contributed significantly to Soviet scientific and military might.
