Static Structural Analysis of Stainless Steel Based Skirt-To-Jacket Junction Using Design-By-Analysis Approach for a Vertical Jacketed Vessel

Pressure vessels are one of the key components in the working of an industry. Jacketed vessels are one such pressure vessels used for either heating or cooling of the vessel. A jacket and skirt support for vertical pressure vessel are designed as per ASME Section. Due to lack of design rules for such a case, static structural finite element analysis is carried out to check the feasibility of the skirt-to-jacket dished end junction. Effect of mechanical and wind/seismic loads on the junction are observed considering two different load combinations. The equivalent induced stresses are limited to allowable stresses of respective materials to ensure protection against plastic collapse and local failure through stress linearization. The study reveals that the maximum equivalent von Mises stresses are induced at the jacket to skirt weld junction. However, the values of this stresses are found to be within the allowable limits resulting in a safe design.
