Imaging Brain Interstitial Fluid

Recent concepts highlight the role of Cerebrospinal Fluids (CSF) and astrocyte-mediated Interstitial Fluid (ISF) flow in waste clearance. ISF, located within the Extracellular Space (ECS), plays an essential role in neuronal health by facilitating metabolic waste removal and cellular signaling. The role of ISF as a clearance pathway is significant in both physiological and pathological states, with certain proteins and molecular mediators playing pivotal roles in ISF dynamics. Advanced imaging techniques are crucial for visualizing interstitial fluid dynamics, enabling deeper insights into its role in diseases. In this review, we evaluate current detection and imaging methods for ISF, emphasizing the importance of monitoring its dynamics to optimize drug delivery, improve treatments for neurological conditions, and explore the complementary applications of each technique in understanding brain function and disease.
