Two or more are better than one: a meta-analysis on collaborative concept mapping

Collaborative concept mapping, which involves constructing a concept map with two or more individuals, has seen a rise in interest over the past decade due to its potential to support knowledge acquisition and retention. However, the last systematic review was published in 2010, leaving the field with inconclusive findings on its effectiveness and a limited understanding of the instructional design and methodological characteristics that influence its impact. We conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis, utilizing the robust variance estimate (RVE) approach to summarize the effect of collaborative concept mapping from 23 primary studies, resulting in 44 effect sizes. The meta-analysis revealed collaborative concept mapping is more effective than individual concept mapping, with a summary effect size of g = 0.42. The study also identified that the activity structure and group size moderated the summarized effect, indicating that activity structure and the number of individuals in a group can influence the effectiveness of the mapping process. This updated meta-analysis underscores the potential of collaborative concept mapping as a valuable educational tool. Continued research is essential to deepen the understanding of its mechanisms and broaden its applicability across diverse educational settings.
