Does the Discrepancy Between Educational Aspiration and Educational Attainment Affect Life Satisfaction? Evidence from Japan
摘要
This study examines whether educational aspiration and attainment discrepancy affect subjective well-being (SWB). Our research focuses on Japan, which has a tremendous interest in education and where members of society tend to believe that educational attainment is based on an individual’s merits. We used the National Survey of Social Stratification and Social Mobility (SSM) 2015 survey data for men and women aged 20–69. We employed a Diagonal Reference Model (DRM) to estimate the impact of educational aspiration, attainment, and discrepancy simultaneously. Our results indicate that falling short of one’s educational aspiration is negatively associated with current SWB, and this effect is considerably more detrimental for men than for women.
