摘要

Sexual experiences of people living with disabilities are understudied, particularly outside of medical narratives. The purpose of this study is to strengthen the awareness of the intersection of physical disability and sexuality. This study was completed based on the need for further literature that illuminates the perspectives and sexual experiences of people living with disabilities (PLWD). Through Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) of social media posts, the present researchers investigate the lived experiences of PLWD, and the common misconceptions and assumptions around their sexual lives. The social media site, TikTok, was used as the primary source of data collection, allowing PLWD to share their perspective on the matter. After In Vivo coding and coding for relevance to the topic, N = 37 data points were analyzed via interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA). Researchers used thematic analysis to further dissect the data. Subthemes were listed as: (1) Misconceptions around physical sexual ability; (2) Assumptions of a lack enjoyment of or desire for sexual behaviors; (3) Assumptions of a lack of attraction toward people living with disabilities; (4) Misconceptions regarding sexual functionality for people living with disabilities; and (5) Assumptions that people living with disabilities participate incorrectly in sexual behaviors. There are common misconceptions and assumptions toward PLWD that are less likely to be directed toward those who are considered to be able-bodied. This is present in a variety of environments such as among the general public and in healthcare settings. The study collectively brings attention to the words and experiences of disabled populations regarding barriers in awareness around disability and sexuality.
