Inventive gender gaps: the role of patent attributes and the regional context

Innovation is a field affected by gender gaps, including the underrepresentation of women in inventive activities. This is not merely a matter of fact; consequences include the misuse of talent and a lack of diversity in knowledge generation, with negative impacts on development. This study focuses on how the gender gap in patenting is shaped not only by patent attributes, but also by social, economic, and science, technology, and innovation (STI) disparities at the regional level. This study employs official regional statistics and patent data from the Chilean National Institute of Industrial Property (2009 to 2020). At the patent level, our findings reveal that the R&D environment and the human needs and chemical sectors are key attributes in fostering female involvement in inventive activities. At the regional level, the degree of development of science, technology, and innovation —more than socioeconomic development or gender equity conditions— is a critical dimension that both directly and indirectly enhances the participation of women in patents.
