The impacts of public attention to artificial intelligence on innovation
摘要
While prior firm-level innovation studies have predominantly focused on artificial intelligence (AI) technology and AI-related policies, they have largely overlooked public AI attention. To address this gap, this study introduces and theorizes public AI attention as a driver of corporate innovation. Leveraging multi-level data from China finds that public AI attention is positively associated with innovation outcomes. Elevated public AI attention amplifies managerial attention to AI and R&D, augmenting human capital and R&D investment and subsequently facilitating innovation output. Notably, while public AI attention enhances corporate innovation short-term, its long-term impact is not sustained. Furthermore, public AI attention and the resulting innovation improve business performance and environmental, social, and governance performance in both the long and short term. Our findings argue that the societal attention surrounding a technology can be as crucial as the technology itself in shaping corporate innovative behavior.
