Eight scholars offered their views on a possible multidisciplinary concept of a society, first as participants of a work group that met at Yale and now in essays contributed to the current issue. Here, I recapitulate and briefly expand on their wide-ranging insights and concerns. Of greatest interest is how their perspectives matched, or deviated from, the tripartite formulation of a “society” I initially put forward (namely, membership, durability, and territoriality: Moffett 2026a, this issue). Our dialogue proved invaluable even if no single view of a “society” satisfied everyone, as might have been anticipated from the subject’s breadth and our diverse backgrounds.
