Reverse-polarity plasma cutting of large-sized plates made of aluminum, titanium and copper alloys

An application of the reverse-polarity plasma cutting method for fabrication of large-sized plates from aluminum, titanium and copper alloys is discussed. It is shown that plasma cutting allows forming the plates as thick as 100 mm with a minimal size of the structure- and heat-affected zone. It is noted that the most severe changes of the structural-phase composition are observed for the titanium alloy during its cutting. In the course of cutting large-thickness sheet metals, the metal displacement by the plasma jet and gas flow from the tool zone results in the formation of a length-uniform cutting line with a thin molten and partially oxidized layer.
