<p>Thermal and mechanical phenomena accompanying the bulk synthesis of an intermetallic from pure Ni and Ti elements are analyzed. Based on the well-known problems of thermomechanics, residual stresses in the reacting mixture are evaluated for the conditions of thermal explosion and various heating modes. It is shown that the stresses are associated with external heating, heat release due to exothermic chemical reactions, and composition change. In one-dimensional model, the temperature and composition are not uniform along the reactor radius.</p>
