<p>The application of carbocyanines with complexing groups as sensors for small molecules and metal ions is considered. Complexing carbocyanines capable of binding strongly and selectively to analytes to generate a reliable fluorescent response are promising for the development of sensor systems and study of cellular processes. The synthesis of new functionalized carbocyanines extends a possibility of detecting not only metals but also organic compounds in low concentrations, which is important for human health diagnostics and monitoring.</p>
