<p>Tetranitrosyl iron complex (TNIC) has pronounced antioxidant and antiglycation properties and is also an inhibitor of aldose reductase. Its <i>in vivo</i> influence on models of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) induced by a combination of high-fat diet and low-dose injections of streptozotocin in C57Bl/6J mice was studied. The daily administration of TNIC for 14 days to mice with T2DM at doses of 9.4 and 15.7 mg kg<sup>−1</sup> had a pronounced antihyperglycemic effect: the glucose level in the blood decreased appreciably to the 12th week of the experiment. The TNIC in a dose of 15.7 mg kg<sup>−1</sup> exerts a stronger antihyperglycemic effect compared to a dose of 9.4 mg kg<sup>−1</sup> and the classical NO-donor diethylenetriamine NONOate decreasing the glucose level nearly to the level of healthy mice. In addition, the animals demonstrated a significant decrease in the level of lipid peroxidation in the blood plasma and liver. The obtained results confirm that the TNIC has a high potential for use in the therapy of T2DM and its complications.</p>
