<p>It has been discovered that sulfated betaine works well as a solid acid catalyst for the protection of amine, aldehydes, and hydroxy groups with acetic anhydride under neat conditions. The sustainability, ease of work-up, economic feasibility, and biodegradability of this novel catalytic approach are its appealing attributes. Infrared spectroscopy, wide-angle X-ray scattering analysis, and scanning electron microscopy were used to evaluate the sulfonated betaine catalyst. It clearly indicates functionalization of sulfonation. Without seeing a noticeable decrease in activity, the catalyst might be used six times. Moreover, the desired products might be obtained without the necessity for chromatographic separations.</p>
