<p>Small-scale fisheries (SSF) are a fishing sector of great significance providing wild-capture seafood and supporting the livelihood of coastal communities. This study focuses on demersal longlines, an important SSF gear, aiming to investigate their ecological impact on natural resources in the eastern Ionian Sea (Mediterranean) using onboard monitoring data from 506 fishing trips from 2013 to 2020. The métier profiles of fishing operations in three subareas (North, Central, South) were constructed based on the species targeted using clustering. Some métiers (those targeting hake, groupers and Sparidae species) appeared in all subareas, but their catch composition differed significantly, indicating intense spatial heterogeneity. The métiers were analyzed regarding discards (5.5% of total abundance, 6.6% of biomass), undersized individuals (24.0% of the abundance of the ten species for which a minimum conservation reference size exists, but only 0.1% of the total) and conservation priority species (Vulnerable: 15.3%, Near Threatened: 14.2%, Endangered: 0.9%, Critically Endangered: 2.8% of total abundance) in catches using Generalized Linear Mixed Models and social network analysis. In some cases, longline fisheries showed unsustainable practices (e.g. catching conservation-priority species or undersized fish). A more detailed analysis of the Sparidae métier (dominant in terms of recorded trips) using Generalized Additive Models revealed that individual fisher behavior (“skipper effect”) plays a key role in driving such practices. Our findings underline the necessity of robust monitoring systems to understand the complex dynamics of SSF activities, and thereby inform management approaches that foster socio-ecological resilience.</p>
