Prenatal exposure to drought and child health outcomes in Zambia
摘要
Drought poses a substantial threat to population health, particularly in settings where rain-fed agriculture is the principal source of livelihood. This paper investigates the effect of prenatal exposure to drought on child health outcomes in Zambia. Combining geo-referenced data from the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) with the global Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), the findings indicate a detrimental effect of drought exposure during pregnancy on children’s nutritional status, particularly in terms of height. Lower crop yields emerge as a potential channel for this adverse effect. Additionally, the findings suggest fade-out effects of prenatal drought exposure on the child’s anthropometric outcomes over time.
