摘要

I study how occupational characteristics can affect the timing of fertility for college-educated women in the U.S. Using the Census and the ACS, I first find that skilled women are more likely to delay fertility when there is a prevalence of working long hours in an occupation. Moreover, using the O*NET indexes as a proxy for measuring human capital depreciation, I show that women’s average age at first birth increases when they work in occupations with active interpersonal relationships, high autonomy, and much competitiveness. This implies that skilled women delay fertility not only when there are time constraints for balancing both career and childcare, but also when accumulating early human capital is critical for mitigating the human capital depreciation caused by career interruptions.
