The Economic Impacts of Vertical Development: Evidence from Chinese Skyscrapers
摘要
This paper examines the economic impact of Chinese skyscrapers using a spatial difference-in-differences methodology. By analyzing grid-cell-level panel data on firm registrations, we identify a significant agglomeration effect, with skyscrapers attracting new firms. This effect is large in magnitude, with the number of firms within 1 km of a skyscraper increasing by 7.4-12.6% following its completion. However, this effect is localized and diminishes with distance, leveling off beyond 1 km. Our findings suggest that the primary mechanism driving this agglomeration is knowledge spillovers among skill-intensive firms within the same industry, facilitated by leading firms in the skyscraper. The paper also explores the heterogeneous economic impacts of skyscrapers, providing policy insights into optimizing the location choices for skyscrapers and the methods of government support.
