<p>It is generally assumed that the central cognitive processing involved in written production is similar, whatever the modality of production: handwriting, typing or oral spelling. Studies on predictors of response times in picture naming provide support for this hypothesis in the case of handwriting and typing. The aim of the current study was to report data in support of this similarity hypothesis for oral spelling. Seventy-five undergraduate students spelled two hundred and thirty-four picture names aloud. Mixed-effects models were run with nine predictors on responses times and oral spelling durations. Oral spelling durations enabled us to investigate the interaction between central and peripheral processing levels. Although the results for response times suggest common central processing levels for all production modalities, the interaction between central and peripheral cognitive processing levels was different from what has been reported, in particular in the case of typing. </p>
