Kinetics of methylene blue adsorption on low cost Algerian pozzolan
摘要
This study primarily focused on investigating the adsorption kinetics of methylene blue (MB) using low-cost pozzolan particles extracted from the Bouhamidi deposit located in the Béni-Saf region of western Algeria. Characterization analyses of pozzolan (N-PZ) conducted through DRX and FRX, BET indicated that silica and alumina were the predominant constituents, with the material consisting of a mixture of Feldspath and Cristobalite. The results of elemental chemical analysis revealed a SiO2/Al2O3 molar ratio ranging from 2 to 3, indicating a high proportion of free quartz. The adsorption capacity of PZ-N for MB removal reached a Qmax of 0.881 mg g−1 with a dye removal of 96% at 25 °C under simple static contact conditions. The experimental determination of the amount of dye adsorbed at equilibrium indicated that the process follows a first-order kinetics model, demonstrated by regression coefficient R2 ranging from 0.914 to 0.961 for lower concentrations and reaching 0.99 for higher concentrations, These findings demonstrate that Algerian N-PZ can effectively serve as an effective lining material for accumulation basins, specifically for the removal of cationic dyes.
