Firm dynamics and resilience among Canadian SMEs: a longitudinal analysis (2016–2022)
摘要
This study presents a longitudinal analysis of the resilience and growth of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Canada from 2016 to 2022. Utilizing datasets from Statistics Canada, the research explores trends in SME birth and death rates, survival rates, and the administrative patterns associated with SME resilience and growth. As a combination of statistical techniques underpinned the longitudinal data analysis process, multiple visualization approaches enhanced consequent interpretations of the findings. The results reveal significant sectoral dynamics, demonstrating that while traditional labor-intensive sectors led in absolute high-growth enterprise volume, specialized, capital-intensive industries exhibited the highest proportional concentration of rapid scaling. The study further describes the alignment of macroeconomic indicators with SME birth trends, showing that business entry rates co-moved positively with inflation but aligned negatively with interest payments. Moreover, it delineates the critical role of micro-enterprises and high-growth enterprises in driving employment and supporting business dynamism within the Canadian economy.
