From trend to strategic practices: a bibliometric analysis of knowledge management in communications and multimedia-related sectors
摘要
Knowledge Management (KM) is a vital strategic resource for the heterogeneous Communications and Multimedia (C&M) sectors, which rely on the continuous integration of information and expertise. Despite this importance, C&M-related organisations often struggle to implement effective KM due to fragmented research and a lack of clear sector-specific guidance. This study aims to map KM functions, trace evolutionary trends, and identify key themes within C&M-related sectors to support coherent practice development. The research positions KM within a dual-perspective framework, integrating the technocratic orientation, emphasising digital infrastructures and systems; with the behavioural orientation, focusing on human social dimensions. Utilising a bibliometric approach, 697 records were extracted from the Scopus database spanning 1995 to 2025. Results indicate a steady growth in publications, with a notable citation peak in 2007, reflecting KM’s transition into a mainstream business practice. This 2007 peak was further characterised by C&M sector-specific research, which underscored KM’s rising practical significance in creative and technical C&M domains. Co-occurrence analysis identified four thematic clusters: communication and collaboration, ICT and work outcomes, knowledge-sharing mechanisms, and digital platforms. The discussion highlights that successful KM in this field requires a socio-technical alignment, where technological infrastructures must be integrated with human-centred practices such as trust and leadership communication. The study concludes by proposing a practical KM framework that reframes these clusters through the lens of organisational success factors. It is recommended that future research investigates data governance, hybrid human–machine workflows, and value measurement to further refine KM strategies for the evolving digital landscape of C&M.
