<p>This study examined the use of presidential candidate tweets as sources in news stories by CNN.com and FoxNews.com during the 2016 and 2020 presidential campaigns. The analysis focused on the framing of stories and tweets, the relationship between the tweet’s frame and the story’s frame, the presentation and role of tweets in the news, and the existence of other direct sources in the news stories. The study found that both CNN and Fox News presented similar news frames in their coverage of the 2016 and 2020 US presidential election campaigns. Both organizations focused primarily on covering tweets from the Republican candidate for both 2016 and 2020 campaigns, however these tweets served different roles in the stories published by the two organizations. A notable finding is that tweets seem to serve as triggers for news stories, and they also tend to replace other direct sources of information.</p>
