<p>Building on Herzberg’s (<CitationRef CitationID="CR25">1959</CitationRef>) dual-factor theory of hygiene and motivation, which conceptualizes job dissatisfaction and satisfaction respectively, this study introduces a novel quantitative methodology to complement Herzberg’s predominantly qualitative framework. This approach quantifies the relative importance of hygiene and motivation factors within professional settings. Leveraging Shannon’s (<CitationRef CitationID="CR55">1948</CitationRef>) mathematical theory of information, particularly the concept of entropy, we propose a new mathematical model leading to the calculation of the Hygiene-Motivation Salience Index. The HMSI assesses the prevalence and variability of these factors among employees, offering a quantitative framework for evaluating workplace climate. By enabling predictions of employee disengagement and potential attrition, the HMSI provides actionable insights for organizational strategies. The model is empirically validated using data from a study on teacher attrition in France, illustrating its capacity to identify critical factors influencing professional stability. Numerical examples and real-world applications demonstrate the HMSI’s practicality and its potential as a robust tool for targeted interventions. This research bridges applied mathematics and social sciences, providing a statistical foundation for improving job satisfaction and enhancing employee retention.</p>
