Exploring tidal inundation: temporal trends analysis and community perceptions in Chattogram City coastal area, Bangladesh

This study conducts a comprehensive assessment of tidal inundation in the Chattogram City coastal area in Bangladesh, employing a blend of temporal trend analysis and community perception. Parameters explored include water level trends, projected water levels for the next decade, local perceptions of inundation, depth, and duration of inundation, and factors influencing water stagnation. Data from six-gauge stations (Sadarghat—BIWTA, Kalurghat—CPA, Khal-10—CPA, Sadarghat—CPA, SW 125—BWDB, and SW 152.2—BWDB) were collected, alongside household data from five Wards. Utilizing mixed methods, quantitative data from time series analysis and household surveys were combined with qualitative insights from focus group discussions and key informant interviews. Results reveal rising water levels at multiple stations, except SW 152.2 (BWDB), which exhibited a decreasing trend. Tide data forecasting projects future trends. Community perceptions offer firsthand accounts of tidal inundation's impact. This study benefits urban planners and policymakers, aiding their adaptation strategies and long-term mitigation efforts. The synthesis of quantitative analysis and qualitative narratives enriches understanding and informs actionable steps for safeguarding the Chattogram City coastal area.
