<p>This essay reviews the intellectual impact of Bob Emerson on the author's scholarship and teaching. Emerson’s mentorship supported the author’s ethnographic research and imparted lessons that continue to shape the author’s classroom activities today. In different ways these projects explore the relationship between trouble and disputing on the one hand, and joyous community on the other. The essay suggests that Emerson's approach to interactionist ethnography maintains untapped potential for tracking the precise shape and form of contemporary wellbeing and social problems.</p>
