Phenolic Extracts with Antioxidant and Anticancer Potential from Araticum Fruits (Annona crassiflora Mart.), a Native Brazilian Plant

The native Brazilian fruit, araticum, contains a high amount of phenolics, leading to a strong antioxidant capacity, which makes it a potential source of anticancer agents. This study aimed to use different pre-treatments to improve the efficiency of phenolic extraction and evaluate its bioactive activity. Different pre-treatments, including ultrasound and microwave, were used to increase the extraction yield. Microwave-assisted pre-treatment enhanced both the phenolic yield and antioxidant activity of extracts significantly. Specifically, gallic acid content increased from 131.35 to 156.94 mg/100 g fresh fruit, while the oxygen radical absorbance capacity doubled, rising from 60.1 to 123.2 µmol TE/g fresh fruit. In addition, the colon cancer cell proliferation assay showed that araticum phenolic extracts, especially with microwave-assisted pre-treatment, have strong antiproliferative capability with low IC50 value, ranging from 8.06 µg/mL to 33.52 µg/mL. The possible anticancer targets and inhibition mechanisms have been predicted by PharmMapper and StringDB. The phenolic extract of araticum exhibits strong bioactivities, suggesting its potential as a health-promoting ingredient for chemoprevention.
