<p>This article explores how students in Uzbekistan are developing 21st-century competencies within subject areas in the early grades. Through an exploratory study adapted from clinical interview methodology, the research focuses on the Uzbekistan Education for Excellence Program (UEEP), funded by USAID. The study involved interviews with 30 students who participated in the Program and 30 students who did not. Tasks in mathematics and language arts were developed to assess students’ reasoning skills in a one-to-one format. Findings indicate that students engaged in the UEEP intervention were more likely to demonstrate sophisticated reasoning skills than their counterparts who were not part of the intervention. The study highlights how this methodology complements traditional assessments.</p>
