Modelling carsharing choice behaviour considering extended utility function and individual attitudes: a hybrid choice modelling approach

Carsharing offers a comfortable travel environment but also has a complex use process. These features are ignored by traditional cost- and time-based travel utility models but indeed affect carsharing choice behaviour. Moreover, travellers’ attitudes towards these attributes also influence their decision making. However, there is a lack of studies that systematically consider extended utility function and latent variables on carsharing travel behaviour. Therefore, this paper uses the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) framework to extend the utility function, including the introduction of travel process complexity, travel comfort, co-rider importance, and further considers corresponding latent variables. A hybrid choice model is built which combines discrete choice and structural equation models. A stated preference survey including 500 respondents and 3,000 travel scenarios is used to estimate the model parameters. The results show that: (1) The extended observable variables are all significant and improve the model fit significantly, while the latent variables have a weaker effect. (2) Heterogeneity exists in carsharing choice behaviour between car-owning and carless travellers. Car-owning travellers care more about the travel complexity and comfort and the two new variables are elastic, while carless travellers care more about carsharing travel time and cost. Targeted suggestions are proposed to attract carsharing use for more benefits, including simplifying the carsharing use process, providing a comfortable travel environment, carefully increasing the use price in carless member-based carsharing companies, etc.
