<p>Park-and-ride has been identified a viable solution to tackle the growing urban travel demand and turn many developed cities into sustainable societies however, such facilities are yet to be established in the context of fast-growing Indian cities. The present study investigates the mode choice behaviour of private vehicle users in the presence of a sustainable alternative, park-and-ride. The choice responses of private vehicle users collected through a stated preference questionnaire survey are analysed, and random parameter logit models are developed. The willingness-to-pay of the private vehicle users is estimated towards the improvement of park-and-ride facilities. The present study also explores the interaction effects of trip purpose on the mean parameter estimates of attributes influencing the mode choice behaviour of the drive-alone users. The study findings indicate significant willingness-to-pay values of users towards improvement of various mode-specific attributes. Further, the willingness-to-pay estimates are observed to differ among drive-alone user categories classified by their ‘trip purpose’. The research outcomes, particularly highlighting the influence of trip purpose on mode choice behaviour, can serve as a consistent framework to implement park-and-ride facilities in major Indian cities and assist urban planners and policymakers in developing policies aimed at improving the attributes influencing choice decisions of private vehicle users with varying socio-economic backgrounds and travel characteristics.</p>
