<p>Although government employee salaries have been the subject of many researchers, there is an ongoing debate among scholars regarding the factors underlying salary change in the public sector. This narrative review addresses the ongoing debate on the factors to salary increases. A comprehensive literature search was conducted by the two authors, resulting in the identification of 61 relevant articles published between 2000 and 2024. The review concludes that understanding the interplay of political and economic factors is critical for policymakers, researchers and practitioners in the public sector to make informed decisions about the compensation of government employees.</p>
