Effects of wild plant-derived agricultural jiaosu on soil fertility and pakchoi growth

Agricultural Jiaosu (AJ), an environmentally sustainable technology, has seen increasing adoption in ecological agriculture. Yet, research on wild plants remains limited.
MethodsTo bridge this gap, three wild plant species were selected to produce AJ, and their efficacy was systematically compared against the conventional 1/2 Hoagland nutrient solution (CK) in pakchoi cultivation.
ResultsResults showed that AJ application achieved effects comparable to 1/2 Hoagland nutrient solution in maintaining soil total potassium content, catalase and protease activities, as well as pakchoi shoot fresh/dry weight, anthocyanin, vitamin C, and soluble protein levels. Notably, all three AJs markedly enhanced root growth, with fresh and dry root biomass increasing by 37.21–57.54% and 37.34–48.65%, respectively. Morus alba and Rumex dentatus AJs further elevated soil urease activity by 13.51% and 5.41%, respectively; while increasing total phenols and flavonoids in pakchoi. Morus alba AJ also increased soil organic matter by 17.75% relative to 1/2 Hoagland nutrient solution, whereas Rumex dentatus AJ significantly improved soil total nitrogen (22.99%), total phosphorus (12.23%), and pH, alongside promoting pakchoi growth parameters—plant height, root volume, and root length—by 7.5%, 57.89%, and 51.15%, respectively.
ConclusionsThis study confirmed that wild plant-derived AJs effectively enhance soil fertility and stimulate pakchoi growth, particularly in root development, while yielding produce quality equivalent to conventional 1/2 Hoagland methods. These findings confirmed the feasibility of AJ from wild plants and provide foundational data to support the utilization of wild plant resources and the broader adoption of AJ technology in sustainable agriculture.
