Heavy metals might influence biological activities of soil close to the rhizosphere in a teak (Tectona grandis l.f.) plantation forest of India

Rhizosphere being the soil-root interaction zone often plays a vital role in the regulation of nutrients, heavy metals, and soil biology. This study was undertaken to evaluate the impact of heavy metals on biological activities rhizosphere soil zone of a teak plantation forest in Burla, India.
MethodThe soil samples were collected from three soil depths (0–15, 15–30, and 30–45 cm) and three lateral distances (0 m, 1 m, and 1.5 m) from the tree. The soils at the 0–15 cm depth and 0 m distance from the tree were considered to be the soil close to the rhizosphere zone.
ResultsThe results displayed a distinct antagonistic relationship between heavy metal concentration and biological activities in the soil. The enzymatic activities were low in the soil close to the rhizosphere zone, while the basal soil respiration, microbial quotient, and respiratory quotient also being low in the same soil. The heavy metals, on the other hand, was found to be more in the soil close to the rhizosphere zone (i.e., at 0-15 cm depth and 0 m distance from tree) in relation to the concentrations of Al (7403.69 mg/kg, 12466.34 mg/kg), Mn (22.60 µg/kg, 47.31 µg/kg), Cu (91.16 µg/kg, 115.66 µg/kg), Zn (257.49 µg/kg, 380.12 µg/kg), As (10.00 µg/kg, 16.15 µg/kg), and Pb (49.19 µg/kg, 55.59 µg/kg). Results also indicate that the heavy metals concentration was responsible for modifying the biological activities in the soil close to the rhizosphere.
ConclusionTherefore, it was concluded that heavy metals and biological activities were co-regulated by each other.
