Exploring the antidiabetic nutraceutical potential of fruits waste, a revolutionary approach for diabetes mellitus treatment

Nutraceuticals derived from food and related sources offer both nutritional, and therapeutic benefits and are expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of world. As the food industry evolves, the incorporation of nutraceuticals into everyday foods will create products that not only nourish but also help in the prevention and management of chronic diseases. Diabetes mellitus is a non-communicable chronic metabolic disorder worldwide, as every third person suffers from it. Nutraceuticals, which can also be extracted from the millions of tons of agro-food waste generated annually, offer a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to chemically synthesized antidiabetic drugs. This comprehensive review focuses on the assessment of antidiabetic nutraceuticals potential of fruits waste, including pomace, peel, rind, seed and kernel. It provides a detailed overview of diabetes mellitus, fruits waste bioactive compounds, studies performed on (in-vitro and in-vivo evaluation) of nutraceutical worth of fruits waste, their mechanisms of action, cost comparison with synthetic drugs, and limitations associated with this novel procedure. These nutraceuticals demonstrated effective results in controlling diabetes mellitus through various mechanisms, with some showing results equal to or even superior to those of commonly used synthetic drugs for diabetes management. These nutraceuticals are low-cost, easily available, safe, long term and sustainable solutions for the management of diabetes mellitus. It aligns well with the sustainable development goal (Goal 12; responsible consumption and production) and the circular economy by reducing resource wastage, minimizing environmental impact, and creating new opportunities for resource utilization.
