The redesigned Psychotria genus: medicinal potential of alkaloids and biotechnological strategies for metabolite improvement

Throughout human history, plants have been used to treat diseases, forming the foundation of modern therapeutics. The medicinal properties of many species are attributed to secondary metabolites, such as alkaloids, flavonoids, and phenolics, which are widely applied in the pharmaceutical, agrochemical, and food industries. The genus Psychotria has historically been recognized for its alkaloid-producing species; however, taxonomic revisions have recently reassigned many species to other genera. Only seven Psychotria species are known to produce alkaloids: Psychotria calocarpa, Psychotria adenophylla, Psychotria malayana, Psychotria henryi, Psychotria milnei, Psychotria pilifera, and Psychotria viridis. There is no comprehensive work summarizing the medicinal potential of these remaining alkaloid-producing species. This gap in knowledge limits the exploration of their bioactivities and industrial applications. Herein, this work aims to review the true potential of the medicinal application of alkaloids from the genus Psychotria based on available literature. Additionally, we discuss biotechnological approaches that could be applied to these species to enhance alkaloid production, such as plant tissue culture, metabolite elicitation, and genetic engineering. These strategies offer promising tools for optimizing yields and conserving species. Further research is crucial to fully uncover the therapeutic potential of Psychotria and advance their applications in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.
