Phytochemistry, pharmacology and bibliometrics insight of the genus Callicarpa L.: an extensive review encompassing the years from approximately 2010 to 2024

The genus Callicarpa L. holds significant importance in the field of medicinal plants. It encompasses various members that exhibit medicinal properties and have been utilized for treating diverse ailments and wounds. This genus contains many compounds, including monoterpenoids, sesquiterpenoids, diterpenoids, triterpenoids, flavonoids, phenylpropanoids, and other compound types. Some extracts and isolated compounds from this genus have shown promising pharmacological activities, such as hemostatic, anti-cancer, anti-bacteria, antioxidant, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, hypoglycemic and lipid-lowering, anti-ulcer, anti-amnesic, cardiovascular, and hepatoprotective activities, etc. A systematic review of the literature from January 1, 2010 to May 25, 2024 was performed by searching databases such as PubMed, China Knowledge Network Infrastructure, and Web of Science. This review gathered original studies about genus Callicarpa, concerning their active components and pharmacological effects. Additionally, this review represents the first utilization of bibliometrics within the scope of the Web of Science Core Collection database to explore Callicarpa. The study identifies the research trends and hotspots within Callicarpa by employing cluster analysis. In addition to providing a comprehensive summary of existing knowledge, this review aims to identify research gaps and highlight areas that warrant further investigation in the field of phytochemistry and pharmacology of Callicarpa. By uncovering these gaps, the review intends to stimulate further research and exploration, ultimately contributing to a deeper understanding of the potential applications and therapeutic benefits of Callicarpa species.
