<p><i>Astragali Radix</i> (<i>A. Radix</i>) is a medicine and food homologous plant that has been used as an ethnomedicine in China for a long history. Due to its affordability and safety, it has been widely studied by medical researchers and accumulating evidence has showed that it has enormous potential in treating human diseases. Polysaccharides, saponins and flavonoids are the major active ingredients in <i>A. Radix</i>. Modern pharmacological studies show that these compounds exhibit promising properties in immunomodulation, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, diabetes treatment, neuroprotection and anticancer. Nevertheless, few studies are available reviewing the phytochemical and biological properties of the main active components in <i>A. Radix</i>. In this study, we first provide an overview of the botany, morphological features and nutritional properties of <i>A. Radix</i>. In addition, the structure, extraction, separation, and purification of polysaccharides, saponins and flavonoids in <i>A. Radix</i> are introduced. Finally, the up-to-date progress of studies on the pharmacological effects of these bioactive compounds were summarized in order to provide valuable implications for its further development and application in modern medicine.</p>
