<p>The norditerpenoid cryptotanshinone has been isolated from roots of the plant <i>Perovskia angustifolia</i> Kudr. (Lamiaceae). Cryptotanshinone has been shown to have a pronounced anti-inflammatory effect. The antiexudative effect of cryptotanshinone exceeded that of diclofenac by 14.1 – 15.2% (<i>p</i> &lt; 0.05) under the influence of the phlogogenic agents formalin and dextran. The advantage of cryptotanshinone was less pronounced and not statistically significant for experimental serositis (pleurisy and peritonitis) caused by silver nitrate. More significant differences in the anti-inflammatory effects of cryptotanshinone and diclofenac were revealed when comparing their antiproliferative effects. In this case, cryptotanshinone was superior to diclofenac by 16.8% (<i>p</i> &lt; 0.05). The more pronounced anti-inflammatory effect of cryptotanshinone as compared to diclofenac was determined by its more pronounced optimizing effect on the ratio of proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines in the animal body during the development of the inflammatory process.</p>
